Don’t worry whether you’re a seasoned veteran of SEO or a new on the scene SEO, both parties are making mistakes with link building and content creating.

SEO can be a complex field; with everyone’s stock answer being “it depends” with a number of factors regarding link building and content. Alongside a lot to remember and keeping a track on mistakes; bad strategies can happen. We are going to try and give you a few things that are costing your clients valuable traffic.

#1: Directing All Your Links to Your Home Page

Don’t just think because most of your sales and interaction goes to your home page that your links should do too.

A better strategy is to link deep into your site and bring visibility to all those other wonderful pages. It stops users that enter sites fighting through content to find what they actually want to look for. In most cases users wouldn’t actually sit around trying to find that specific thing they were looking for; they’d turn back around and find a site that linked straight to what they wanted which more than likely would be a competitor of yours.

With doing this it will build the overall value of your site, which will then in turn help you achieve better search engine visibility.

#2: Not Using Blogging as a Strategy

Not blogging is a massive mistake; just because not a lot of people will read them doesn’t mean it isn’t important to your website. See it as fresh piece of content every single time a blog post is put live; keeping your website up to date for the search engine. On top of that, if you have more pages in your index there are more pages to rank, which will then turn into a little extra traffic.

Not blogging makes your site look more dormant and Google definitely don’t like inactive sites.

#3: Getting Backlinks from Irrelevant Websites

This mistake is a very popular one. When looking for backlinks, stick to sites that are relevant to that specific target audience. You don’t want to be getting a link from a car dealer’s website if you’re looking for links regarding an IT company. The more relevant your links the effect it has on your Google ranks; the more relevant the link the better it will be.

#4: Linking To Sites with a Poor Reputation

At any cost, don’t do this. This can be one of the worst things whilst link building you can possibly do to your website; this technique is also called “bad neighbours”. Doing this would mean to Google that you endorse what this website is doing and not only penalise them but penalise you too. So whatever they offer you, decline it... it’s definitely not worth the risk.

#5: Checking If Your Backlinks Have a nofollow Attribute

Nofollow links are usually coincided with blog comments and mentions; but when actively searching for backlinks they can also crop up too. Some companies can ask you to buy a link or for reciprocal links and once both have been added to the websites; cheat you out of it. They do this by giving your links a ‘nofollow’ tag, which basically changes it from having value to pretty much none. Yes you will still have visibility to the users of the other website, but it will not help your Google rankings whatsoever. Make sure you check your active links regularly and if changed; pursue them.

Conclusion

To conclude, make sure you are regularly checking up on your active links. If not active, chase them and see why they are not active anymore. Staying away from these mistakes can improve your link building and content building a lot and make it a lot more valuable when doing so.
